Concrete planning guide

Keep an isolation joint visible through resurfacing

A resurfaced floor or patio still has joints that serve a purpose. The finished appearance should be discussed with the joint layout rather than used to conceal it.

What to record

  • Sketch existing joints, columns, walls and changes in slab thickness shown on available drawings.
  • Photograph repaired cracks crossing the proposed surface area.
  • Identify any previous overlay that bridged a joint and later cracked.

The decision to discuss

Ask how the new surface system will respect the joint layout. A continuous-looking finish is not proof that movement has stopped. The detail should identify joints carried through the work and how those joints will be treated.

Why the surrounding context matters

Joints can serve different purposes in a concrete assembly. The work should identify the actual junction and how the retained surfaces relate to it. A filled line and a functioning joint are different observations; ask for the intended detail before approving the finish.
