Concrete planning guide

Who should review concrete beside a retaining wall?

A walkway next to a retaining wall may be affected by conditions beyond the walkway. The appropriate first reviewer depends on what has changed and what the wall supports.

What to record

  • Show the wall, top and bottom ground levels, adjacent slab and any observed leaning or separation.
  • Provide existing drawings if available.
  • Keep people away from unstable areas and avoid entering a space beneath unsupported material.

The decision to discuss

A surface contractor may refer wall movement or structural support questions to an engineer. Define the retained earth and building relationships before selecting a patch. A walkway repair is not a certification of the retaining structure.

Why the surrounding context matters

Concrete can change with moisture, temperature, load and support conditions. A visible crack therefore needs context before a repair method is selected. Use the observations below to explain the question; leave the project-specific diagnosis to the appropriate review.
